How to Choose the Right Lighting for Your Kitchen
The kitchen is not just a place for preparing food, but also one of the main spaces in the home. It is where the family gathers, has breakfast and dinner, and welcomes guests. Lighting should therefore be functional and comfortable while blending harmoniously with the interior.
A single ceiling light is usually not enough. To make the kitchen convenient at any time of day, several lighting arrangements need to be planned in advance.
Divide the kitchen into functional zones
Well-planned lighting consists of several layers. Each serves its own purpose:
- general lighting illuminates the entire room evenly;
- task lighting illuminates the worktop, sink and hob;
- lighting above the dining table or kitchen island creates a comfortable atmosphere;
- decorative lighting adds accents and complements the interior.
This zoning allows you to turn on only the light sources needed at a particular moment.
Ensure good lighting for the work surface
When preparing food, it is particularly important to see the work surface clearly. If the light is only behind the person, a shadow falls across the worktop, making it inconvenient to work.
Linear LED light fixtures or LED strips installed under the upper cabinets are often used to illuminate the work area. The light should be distributed evenly across the entire worktop, without creating harsh glare or distorting the colours of food.
The position of the light fixtures needs to be planned at the design stage so that wiring connection points, sockets and switches can be provided in advance.
Choose the right colour temperature
Colour temperature is measured in kelvins and affects how a space is perceived:
- around 2700−3000 K — warm light that creates a cosy atmosphere;
- 3500−4000 K — neutral light suitable for preparing food;
- above 4000 K — cooler lighting that may seem too harsh in a home kitchen.
Neutral white light is usually chosen for the work area, with warmer light above the dining table. It is important for the different light sources to work well together without creating an unpleasant colour contrast.
Consider brightness, not just bulb wattage
The amount of light is determined not by watts but by luminous flux, which is measured in lumens. The brightness required depends on the kitchen’s floor area, ceiling height, the colour of the walls and furniture, and the amount of natural light.
Interiors with dark cabinet fronts and finishes require more light than rooms with light-coloured surfaces. However, excessively bright lighting can also cause discomfort, so it is important to find a balance between functionality and a cosy atmosphere.
Use several lighting arrangements
Lighting suitable for preparing food may be too bright for a family dinner. Separate switches allow the main lighting, work-area lighting, lights above the table and decorative elements to be controlled independently.
Dimmers can also be installed to adjust brightness smoothly. Before purchasing, make sure that the chosen bulbs and light fixtures support this function and are compatible with the dimmer.
Plan the lighting for the dining area and island
Pendant lights help to visually define the dining table or kitchen island. Their size, number and mounting height depend on the dimensions of the furniture and the overall style of the interior.
The light should not dazzle people seated at the table or obstruct their view. For a long island, you can use several matching pendants or a single linear light fixture.
Add decorative lighting
Decorative lighting makes an interior more distinctive. LED lighting can be installed inside glass-fronted cabinets, in niches, along the kitchen cabinet plinth or on open shelves.
However, decorative light does not replace general and task lighting. Its purpose is to highlight architectural elements, furniture and textures, and to create a cosy atmosphere in the evening.
Choose practical and safe light fixtures
Kitchen light fixtures may be exposed to steam, moisture and dirt. It is therefore better to choose models made from practical materials that are easy to clean.
Particular attention should be paid to light fixtures near the sink and hob. Their installation must meet safety requirements, and electrical installation work should be entrusted to qualified professionals.
Why lighting should be planned before renovation begins
If the position of light fixtures is decided after finishing work is complete, it may be necessary to move sockets, lay additional cables or disturb the finished surfaces of the walls and ceiling.
A lighting design prepared in advance helps you:
- determine the position of all light sources;
- calculate the brightness required;
- choose suitable switches and lighting arrangements;
- provide wiring connection points;
- coordinate the lighting with the furniture and kitchen layout;
- avoid additional work and costs.
